Brazzers Vault learning was regarded as a process whereby 'Certain combinations of words and intonation of voice are strengthened through reward and are gradually made to occur in appropriate situ­ations by the process of discrimination learning.' Quite apart from the problem of 'storage capacity' since, as we have seen, the number of different sentences in a language is indefinitely great, there is the problem of the time factor. (As we have seen, to articulate all the twenty-word sentences in English would require 1012 centuries.) The speaker of a language is always pro­ducing novel utterances, ones which he has not heard before. Any satisfactory account of language learning must necessarily involve some processes of generalization and abstraction from the language data to which the learner is exposed, in order simply to reduce the quantity of what has to be retained.

This raises in an acute form the adequacy of any account of language leamingas simply the acquisition of habits, or dispositions to respond, if they are understood as sets of fixed responses to specific environmental stimuli, or in Mowrer's dis­approving words 'fixed automatic, unconscious neural connections or bonds between some stimulus and some response' .
